Best Productivity Tools and Essentials for Digital Nomads 2024

Whether you're a seasoned nomad or just starting your journey, having the right productivity tools, apps and other essential resources at your disposal can make all the difference in staying organized, focused, and efficient while on the go.

In this blog, we'll explore the best productivity tools and essentials specifically curated for digital nomads. We'll cover everything you need to know to elevate your productivity game and thrive in the remote work lifestyle.

Calendly: Manage Meeting Bookings in Different Time Zones

Imagine being a digital nomad crossing different time zones regularly, juggling meetings and appointments with clients, colleagues, family, and friends worldwide. Calendly is a productivity booster by simplifying scheduling across time zones and streamlining the entire process. Here's how Calendly can enhance productivity for digital nomads:

  • Automated Scheduling: Nomads can share their availability, eliminating the back-and-forth of scheduling meetings across time zones.

  • Time Zone Detection: It detects the respondent's time zone, ensuring meetings are scheduled at convenient times for both parties.

  • Buffer Time: Nomads can set buffer times between meetings to accommodate for time zone differences and avoid scheduling conflicts.

  • Integration: Seamlessly integrates with calendar apps, syncing events across time zones and minimizing confusion.

  • Reminder Notifications: Sends reminders to both parties, reducing the likelihood of missed meetings due to time zone differences.

Otter.ai: AI Note-Taking App

At this point, the productivity boost from AI tools needs no explanation. AI note-taking apps are particularly valuable in capturing and organizing information efficiently, whether it's during virtual meetings, interviews, or brainstorming sessions, especially for digital nomads juggling multiple tasks and projects remotely all the time. This tool enables seamless transcription and note-taking, freeing up time and mental energy for more strategic tasks.

Recently I’ve been looking for an AI note-taking app, and it seems like most services in the market require a monthly subscription. One free AI note taking app I found is Read.ai, but the free version only generates up to 5 meeting reports per month.

Among the paid services, Otter.ai seems to be the one with the best combo of positive reviews, functionalities, and competitive pricing:

  • Voice-to-text conversion for real-time note-taking during meetings and discussions.

  • Automatic transcription of audio recordings for easy reference and review.

  • Cloud synchronization for access to notes from any device, anywhere.

  • Intelligent organization features to categorize and search notes effortlessly.

  • Collaboration tools for sharing and collaborating on notes with teams remotely.

  • Integration with popular productivity apps for seamless workflow management.

Airalo: A Global eSim Card

For those who often travel to foreign countries, I recommend investing in a global sim card so you can get data coverage instantly when you land in a foreign country. In some countries, registering and setting up a local sim card can take time, while those sim cards sold at the airport are typically bad deals.

Airalo is a popular one among digital nomads. However, these global sim cards can be a bit pricey and have various expiry dates, so be sure to choose one that suits your needs the best.

Wise: Low-Cost Foreign Currency Management App

Wise (formerly TransferWise) is a trusted platform for low-cost international money transfers and currency exchange, helping you save on fees when dealing with multiple currencies.

Owning a Wise card is arguably the financial passport to digital nomad living; pretty much all the nomads I know have it. And I always stick with using Wise for ATM withdrawals due to the competitive exchange rate and its feature of auto-selecting the currency with the most favorable exchange rate.

But do note that, essentially it's a prepaid card, and you don’t earn interest from the balance there, so I try to transfer on an as-needed basis.

These are the reasons you should get a Wise card if you hop around different countries or need to deal with multiple currencies frequently:

  • Wise offers a hard-to-beat conversion rate at the mid-market rate, which can save you up to 2.5% in foreign exchange fees.

  • With Wise, you can open foreign bank accounts to send and receive money without incurring account fees.

  • Wise automatically selects the best conversion currency for your transactions, ensuring you get the most favorable rates.

  • Gain peace of mind with Wise's real-time transaction notifications, which helps prevent fraud by keeping you informed of all account activity.

  • Enjoy the flexibility of holding and spending money in over 40 currencies with Wise's multi-currency capabilities.

  • Unlike most cards that charge around a 2.5% foreign transaction fee when used overseas, Wise is designed as a global card that does not impose this fee.

GL.iNet: Travel WiFi Router

As a digital nomad, having a travel WiFi router can help boost productivity by ensuring a stable and secure internet connection no matter where you are. The most compelling use case for owning a travel wifi router is that it can replicate a similar wifi speed if your work station is far from the main router.

Here are the main benefits of travel WiFi routers:

  • Guarantees a reliable and safe internet connection regardless of location.

  • Establishes a personal network to enhance security measures.

  • Enhances WiFi speed, particularly beneficial if your workstation is distant from the primary router.

  • Designed compactly to cater to the needs of digital nomads who are constantly on the move, ensuring easy portability without compromising functionality.

Height-adjustable Laptop Stand

Ensuring a dependable and effective remote work setup is essential. Consider investing in a quality laptop stand to enhance ergonomics and alleviate neck strain during prolonged work sessions.

No standing desk? No problems! You can still prioritize ergonomics while working remotely with a laptop stand. The advantages are numerous:

  • Alleviate neck strain: By aligning your eye level with your laptop screen, you can avoid slouching and the dreaded "tech neck" syndrome.

  • Enhanced productivity: Work comfortably and like a pro from any coffee shop table with this versatile accessory.

  • Broad device compatibility: The laptop and tablet stand supports most devices, ensuring versatility in your workspace setup.

  • Adjustable design: Enjoy the convenience of multi-angle adjustability to find the perfect viewing angle for your needs.

Anti-theft Laptop Cable Lock

Worried about maintaining your productivity and the safetywing of belongings when working in bustling environments like cafes, coworking spaces, hostels, or shared Airbnb accommodations? Consider the advantages of using a laptop cable lock to enhance security and provide peace of mind. Here's how it can benefit you:

  • Safeguard your laptop by tethering it to stationary or difficult-to-move objects like desks, beds, or chairs.

  • Act as a deterrent against theft, adding an extra layer of protection for your valuable work equipment.

A physical safety net while traversing the globe is the basis to help digital nomads stay productive and sane while living abroad and working remotely. Amidst the thrill of exploration, unforeseen circumstances can arise, potentially derailing your nomadic lifestyle. This is where travel insurance becomes indispensable. A reliable travel insurance policy not only provides financial protection against medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost baggage but also offers peace of mind, allowing you to focus on your work and adventures without worrying about the what-ifs.
