To this day, I still vividly remember a brief encounter with an old man in Cuba years ago. I was on a G Adventures tour with other 18-30 somethings exploring the unique culture in Cuba. We stayed with locals, wandered through the vibrant streets in Havana and Trinadad, and danced to the upbeat Cuban music.
Yet, amidst the picturesque landscapes and cultural immersions, it was a simple encounter in a remote area in Cuba that left an indelible mark on my nomadic heart.
We were hiking in a remote area in the central part of Cuba, where the typical monthly salary in the town amounted to a mere $10. A small house emerged during our hike, seemingly out of nowhere. Our local guide told us an old man lives there by himself for years. We were invited to visit his house, which seems quite dark and simple, and it’s quite eye-opening for western travelers spoiled by all kinds of modern appliances. The old Cuban man has that calm and kind look on this face.
Without being able to speak English, the old man offered to brew a pot of lemongrass tea for everyone. I never had a real lemongrass tea before. I took a sip, and it feels like the best tea I’ve ever had, since then I got hooked on lemonsgrass tea. Looking around his humble house with very bare minimum appliances, somehow I burst into tears unexpectedly. I never like to do so publicly, but for some reason, something deep struck me. We thanked the old man and left for our road.
For the following days, I tried to reflect on what triggered such a strong emotion at that particular moment. Our encounter brief yet profoundly moving. I think I saw myself in him, but somehow his generosity touched me. What resonates deeply is the reflection of my own independent journey in his solitary generosity. In the pursuit of connections, even those fleeting, he shared the best he had, a sentiment echoing the essence of every nomad's desire for authentic connections.
Like him, I traverse this nomadic path, hoping to cross paths with fellow souls who share a moment of connection. His altruism, sharing what little he had, serves as a poignant reminder that even in the transient nature of our journeys, generosity and genuine connections endure.
